How AI is Threatening Our Democracy

Hannah Becker was recently published by the McCain Institute with an article titled "How AI Is Threatening Democracy." In the article, Becker examines how artificial intelligence is transforming the information environment and the growing risks it poses to democratic societies. Rather than viewing AI as inherently harmful, she argues that the technology is accelerating existing challenges by enabling large-scale disinformation campaigns, eroding public trust, amplifying foreign influence operations, and making it increasingly difficult for citizens to distinguish authentic content from AI-generated deception.

The article also explores the importance of strengthening democratic resilience through AI literacy, responsible governance, public-private collaboration, and investments in technologies and policies that promote transparency and trust. Becker concludes that while AI offers tremendous opportunities for innovation and economic growth, preserving democratic institutions will require proactive efforts to ensure these powerful technologies are developed and used responsibly.
