Episode 63 - CSM Michael T. Hall: Discipline, Leadership, and a Life of Service

In this episode of Tipping Spears with Hannah Becker,  I sit down with Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) Michael T. Hall, one of the most respected enlisted leaders in modern military history. Over a 32-year career, CSM Hall served at the highest levels of special operations, becoming the only soldier to hold the senior enlisted role across the 75th Ranger Regiment, JSOC, USASOC, and ISAF in Afghanistan. His influence helped shape the culture, standards, and operational effectiveness of elite units during some of the most consequential years of the Global War on Terror.

CSM Hall shares the story behind the development of the Ranger Regiment’s “Big Four” training standards and what it takes to build disciplined, lethal, and cohesive teams under pressure. Drawing on decades of experience alongside leaders like General Stanley McChrystal, he offers candid insights into leadership, decision-making in high-stakes environments, and the responsibility that comes with serving as the senior enlisted advisor to large-scale, complex operations.

The conversation also explores his recall to active duty in 2009, where he helped oversee more than 130,000 U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, and his continued commitment to service through the Three Rangers Foundation. From combat leadership to veteran transition, CSM Hall reflects on a lifetime of service and why the principles of the Ranger Creed continue to guide him long after leaving the battlefield.

Guest Bio:

Command Sergeant Major Michael T. Hall (Ret.), USA represents the pinnacle of enlisted leadership in the United States Army. In a role defined by responsibility for standards, discipline, and the welfare of soldiers, the Command Sergeant Major serves as the backbone of the force. Over a 32-year career, CSM Hall embodied that role at the highest levels of special operations, earning a reputation as one of the most respected and consequential enlisted leaders in modern military history.

Spending more than two decades in the 75th Ranger Regiment, CSM Hall helped shape the culture and operational excellence of one of the Army’s most elite organizations. His leadership was so widely trusted that he became the only individual in history to serve as the senior enlisted advisor for four of the most critical commands in U.S. and coalition warfare: the 75th Ranger Regiment, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. Alongside senior leaders such as General Stanley McChrystal, he played a central role in developing the Ranger Regiment’s “Big Four” training standards: marksmanship, physical training, medical training, and small unit battle drills, which remain foundational to the force today. McChrystal later described him simply as “the best soldier I have ever known.”

After retiring in 2008, CSM Hall was recalled to active duty just one year later to serve as the senior enlisted advisor for U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, where he helped oversee more than 130,000 personnel during a pivotal phase of the war. Following his military service, he continued to lead in the private sector, holding roles with Lockheed Martin, the McChrystal Group, and as an independent leadership and operational consultant supporting both commercial organizations and the Department of Defense. He later served as Chief of Staff for North American Sales at Scotts Miracle-Grow.

CSM Hall holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from New York State Regents University and has been recognized with some of the military community’s highest honors, including the COL Aaron Bank Award, induction into the Ranger Hall of Fame, the Doughboy Award, and the Georgia Military Hall of Fame. He has also served on the boards of several veteran-focused organizations, including the Wounded Warrior Project, Gallant Few, and the U.S. Army Ranger Association.

Today, he continues his lifelong commitment to service as the Executive Director of the Three Rangers Foundation and as the Honorary Command Sergeant Major of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Focused on supporting combat veterans in their transition to civilian life, CSM Hall remains guided by the principle that leadership does not end with the uniform. For him, living the Ranger Creed is not a chapter of life, but a permanent standard.
